Ambassador Robert Ford suggests exploiting a child patient to improve the image of the U.S. Army

Former U.S. Ambassador to Algeria currently serving in Syria, advised his superiors to send a military aircraft to transport a sick child suffering from spine deformity for treatment in a U.S. hospital.
Robert Ford informed his officials in a cable sent on the ninth of May 2008 and leaked recently by Wikileaks, that the treatment of Mounib Ferchichi (two and a half years old) will not cost the U.S. government anything as a group of Algerians living in the US managed to secure a free treatment for him in Mayo Clinic.
The current ambassador in Damascus, who is suspected to be working for the American security services, indicated in his correspondence that the case of Mounib was addressed by Algerian newspapers which frequently promote anti-American views. He suggested that the use of a military aircraft to transport the child will put these newspapers in a position of enhancing the image of AFRICOM and the U.S. Army involved in significant violations of human rights in Iraq and Afghanistan and in Guantanamo Bay. Children hold a special place in the Algerian society, as he added.

AFRICOM attempted, during the period leading up to the ambassador proposal, to move its headquarters from Germany to Africa; but met with rejection from several African countries including Algeria as rumoured. The military organization operates a news website called Magharebia where several Algerian journalists write, the website is supervised by officers in the U.S. army.

An Algerian activist, who contributed in raising funds for Mounib and who asked not to be named, said that the transfer of the patient was not in a military plane; this means that Ambassador Ford’s proposal failed.

نصح السفير الأمريكي السابق في الجزائر والحالي في سوريا رؤساءه بأرسال طائرة عسكرية أمريكية لنقل طفل مريض يعاني من تشوه في العمود الفقري للعلاج في مستشفى أمريكي.
وأبلغ فورد مسؤوليه في برقية أرسلها في التاسع من ماي 2008 وسربتها ويكيليكس مؤخرا بأن علاج الطفل منيب فرشيشي البالغ من العمر سنتين ونصف لن يكلف الحكومة الأمريكية شيئا لأن رجال أعمال جزائريين مقيمين في أمريكا استطاعوا الحصول على عرض بعلاجه مجانا على نفقة مستشفى مايو كلي المعروف.
ونبه السفير الحالي في دمشق، الذي تثار حوله شبهة العمل مع أجهزة الأمن الأمريكية، في رسالته إلى أن الصحف الجزائرية التي سبق لها أن نشرت مواضيع عن الطفل المريض هي نفسها التي تقوم بشن حملة معادية للولايات المتحدة;ملمحا الى أن استخدام طائرة عسكرية لنقل الطفل سوف يجعل تلك الصحف في وضع المحسن لصورة قيادة أفريكوم والجيش الأمريكي المتورط في انتهاكات كبيرة لحقوق الإنسان في العراق وأفغانستان وفي سجن غوانتانامو، خصوصا وأن للأطفال مكانة خاصة في المجتمع الجزائري كما قال.
هذا ويذكر أن قيادة العمليات الأمريكية في افريقيا (أفريكوم) كانت خلال الفترة التي سبقت ارسال البرقية تسعى الى نقل مقرها من ألمانيا الى افريقيا لكنها جوبهت بالرفض من عدة دول إفريقية يعتقد أن الجزائر احداها. يذكر أيضا أن أفريكوم تملك موقعا اخباريا يدعى موقع مغاربية يكتب فيه مجموعة من الصحافيين الجزائريين ويشرف عليه ضباط أمريكيون.
وبسؤال أحد النشطاء الجزائريين الذين ساهموا في جمع الأموال لنقل الطفل منيب الى الولايات المتحدة، ذكر الناشط الذي طلب عدم نشر اسمه أن عملية نقل المريض لم تتم في طائرة عسكرية، بما يعني أن فورد فشل في اقناع مرؤوسيه باقتراحه
